Strength Training Over 40 in Avon Lake: Where to Start

If you are searching for strength training over 40 in Avon Lake, I want you to hear this first: you are not late. You are right on time. Most people who walk into my gym in their 40s, 50s and beyond think they missed their chance. They did not.

I spent my Navy years as a rescue swimmer, and I have coached right here in Avon Lake since 2020. The people I respect most are not the ones who started young. They are the ones who started, kept showing up, and got stronger for the life they want to live.

Why strength training over 40 matters

As we get older, we slowly lose muscle if we do not use it. That affects how you climb stairs, carry groceries, pick up grandkids and get off the floor. Lifting weights is one of the best ways I know to push back against that. Strong legs, a strong back and a strong grip make daily life easier.

I wrote more on this in the key to longevity is muscle mass, and in muscle is medicine. The short version: strength is not about looks. It is about staying capable.

How often should you lift?

Start small. Two days a week is plenty for a beginner. Give yourself a day of rest between sessions so your body can adjust. After a few weeks, if you feel good, you can add a third day.

Each session can be simple:

  • Squat or sit-to-stand variations
  • A push, like a push-up or dumbbell press
  • A pull, like a row
  • A hinge, like a deadlift with light weight
  • A carry, like walking with a dumbbell or kettlebell in each hand

Learn the movement first. Add weight slowly. Good form beats heavy weight every time.

Mobility and warm-ups are not optional

The older we get, the more a good warm-up pays off. Spend five to ten minutes moving your hips, shoulders, wrists and ankles before you lift. My free Front Rack Mobility Guide is a good place to start for wrists and shoulders. Afterward, a little stretching helps too. Here are my three non-negotiables for post-workout stretching.

Fuel and recovery

You cannot build strength on coffee and good intentions. Get protein at each meal, drink water through the day, and sleep as regularly as you can. Rest days are part of the work. If you are not sure where to start with food, the Beginner Fuel Guide is free, and I offer nutrition coaching at the gym as well.

If you are on a GLP-1 medication, strength work matters even more, and I put together a guide for that too. You can find it on the guides page.

Why a coach makes a difference

Doing this alone is hard. You do not know if your form is right, you do not know when to add weight, and nobody notices when you skip a week. A coach fixes all three. At Erie Shore Athletics, we scale every workout to the person in front of us, so a first-timer and a lifelong athlete can train side by side. We offer group training, semi-private and personal training, nutrition coaching, kids classes and drop-ins. Take a look at our programs to see what fits you.

Members come to us from Avon Lake, Westlake, Bay Village, Sheffield Lake and North Ridgeville. It does not matter which town you drive in from or what your starting point is.

A quick note: if you have a health condition, an old injury, or you have been inactive for a long time, check with your doctor before starting a new program. And stop if something hurts. Muscle soreness is normal. Sharp pain is not.
